Vermont Teacher Salary Information

Vermont Teaching Salaries have been increasing at a rate that has far surpassed the average teacher's salary across the nation. School funding continues to be comparably high to other states while student achievement has not seen desired results.

For incoming teachers who are rightfully concerned for the future of their Vermont teaching salaries, Vermont educational funding does not appear to be declining. The reason for such a hypothesis toward teaching salaries is the state of Vermont's economy and the virtues of the state's education commissioner, Richard Cate.

From a February 5th 2007 news release on BusinessWire.com:
"The governor's proposed fiscal 2008 budget calls for a 2.6% revenue increase. Spending pressures include education spending, which has been escalating in spite of negative enrollment growth."

Vermont has continued to back education and to continually increase teacher and administrator salaries in spite of lagging results behind expected student achievement.

Secondly, Commissioner Richard Cate has begun implementing ideas of efficiency in Vermont's public school system while keeping similar amounts of tax dollars rolling into the schools. The idea appears to be to reduce inefficiencies by reducing class sizes and unnecessary jobs. Vermont teaching jobs may become more competitive while salaries should continue to increase.

From a February 4th 2007 news release in the Rutland Herald:
"The final piece of the governance puzzle is Vermont's shortage of qualified candidates for leadership positions...."

"Cate pulled out flowcharts (see box) showing the typical governance of supervisory unions and districts in Vermont. A dizzying array of arrows shows the redundancies inherent to systems about which Cate quips, "if we were going to start out to build an efficient system, no one could ever figure out who created this."
