Become a Teacher in Delaware

In the school year of 2003-2004, Delaware ranked thirteenth for average teacher salaries. Initially this statistic sounds promising and might be assumed to be a reflection of Delaware's commitment toward supporting public education. However, the percent increase in salary from the previous year was only 1.2 percent. This percent of increase in salary was not enough to offset an inflation of 2.7 percent. Therefore, after inflation adjustments, the average Delaware teacher salary actually decreased from the previous year. This may be an indication that teachers and administrators are losing their ability to expose the terrible importance of education for the future of Delaware and the nation.

Future Delaware Teachers: Becoming a Delaware teacher offers a unique career opportunity. Starting and average salaries are able to provide a comfortable lifestyle, especially when considering teachers enjoy ten weeks of vacation each year! At the same time, Delaware teachers have the opportunity to show their communities how truly important education is in order to change the creeping tide of complacency of the general, Delaware public. Delaware teachers are in a position to perform at high standards. Their efforts may be able to transform into serious change within the communities, the government and especially within the system of education. However, in order for such a change to begin, Delaware needs highly qualified teachers who have an indepth understanding of teaching theories, assessment strategies, student-data analysis, resource management and much more. In order to gain this knowledge and be a true catalyst for change, new teachers need to motivate and attain an advanced education with a Master's degree or PhD. Such a degree also helps the moral of those entrenched within education with a higher salary. Undoubtedly, this helps all of us feel our efforts are appreciated.

Current Delaware Teachers and Administrators: Over the years, Delaware's public education has kept pace with the best of the nation. This fact alone is worth commending all those who have dedicated their careers to education. At the same time, it is worth noting that this is no time to lose sight of our goals. We need to understand as educators we are creating a product that needs to be sold to the public. We are trying to create confident and valuable citizens that contribute to the greatness of this country. As veteran Delaware teachers and administrators, you all know how difficult such a task is. Luckily, we are not alone. We have incredibly intelligent people working on creating the best possible methods for educating, for analyzing progress, for streamlining resources and so on. This incredibly valuable information becomes accessible to us through advanced education from the top, accredited universities. So, as veteran teachers and administrators, be an example for change in the right direction and earn your Master's degree, PhD or Administrative Credentials.

"I decided to go to graduate school and earn my Master of Arts in Education because I am inspired by new knowledge. I feel in order to perform my job to the best of my ability, I need to keep up with current practices and trends in the field of education."
- Sara Marvez -- 6th grade science teacher

"Gaining my Masters degree has earned me respect from Administrators and colleagues. Also, my salary has benefitted greatly. The cost of graduate school was paid off in only a couple years."
- Thomas Bjornson -- high school english teacher

"Postgraduate study was a personal goal of mine and completing my Masters degree has given me a great sense of personal satisfaction, it has also increased my efficiency in the classroom and my marketability in the job market."
- Janet O'Reilly -- 8th grade social studies teacher

"I found my online courses efficient and friendly. I had a desire to go to graduate school, but I didn't want to go through the nonsense of another undergraduate degree, bumping shoulders with students a third my age who have very little understanding of real life or the benefits of real knowledge. A friend recommended online education and I haven't looked back since.

At the age of 53, I love my job more than ever. I get so much satisfaction knowing that many of my students respect me for what I do as a teacher.

I am able to face any sort of situation that arises in my classroom with complete confidence."
- Jonathan Lloyd -- high school chemistry teacher
