Wisconsin Reciprocity Information
If you are coming from another state and wish to acquire your Wisconsin Teaching Certification through reciprocity agreements, you may be able to do so if you either have completed an approved and accredited teacher education program from another state, or, currently hold a valid teaching certification from another state.

The following are requirements and steps to attain your Wisconsin Teaching Certification through reciprocity agreements.

  • Step 1:
    Complete the Initial Wisconsin Certificate Application for out-of-state teachers, Form 1602-OS.

  • Step 2:
    Have your Teacher Education Institute complete form PI-1612 and verify your passing scores for basic skills assessments and content assessments before sending the form to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

  • Step 3:
    Have your previous employers complete Form PI-1613 Employment Verification Form and forward it to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

  • Step 4:
    Provide an application processing fee of $100 by check or money order made payable to the "Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction"

  • Step 5:
    If you have worked, resided or attended college anywhere other than in Wisconsin, you will need to submit your Fingerprints for a background check.

    You may request fingerprint cards from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction by calling 1-800-266-1027.

    You will be sent an FBI card and a Wisconsin Crime Information Bureau card. Cards must be completed by a law enforcement official.

  • Step 6:
    Sign your completed application and have notarized.
