Teacher Licensure Reciprocity in Virginia:

Virginia Reciprocity Information
If you are coming from another state and wish to acquire your Virginia Teaching Certification through reciprocity agreements, you may be able to do so if you either have completed an approved and accredited teacher education program from another state, or, currently hold a valid teaching certification from another state.

The following are requirements and steps to attain your Virginia Teaching Certification through reciprocity agreements.

  • Step 1:

    You will need to download and complete the Initial Virginia Teaching Certification application.

  • Step 2:

    Attach a processing fee of $75. Pay by check or money order and make payable to the "Virginia Department of Education"

  • Step 3:

    You will need to send a front and back copy of your Valid OUt-of-State Teaching Certificate.

  • Step 4:

    Have the "College Verification Form" sent to your teacher education institute, completed and sent back to you.

    You will then need to send the form along with the rest of the application and other materials.

  • Step 5:
    Submit a copy of your Professional Teacher Assessment scores with your application.

    You will need to pass the Praxis I, the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA), and the Praxis II subject exam.

  • Step 6:
    Request Official Transcripts for all coursework you have completed and submit these unopened envelopes along with your application (copies will not be accepted).

  • Step 7:
    Have a "Report on Experience" form completed by a school district official and have it sent along with your application.
