Steps to becoming a teacher in Texas:
- Route 1: Traditional Approach
- Step 1:Request information from Texas State Board of Educator Certification approved institutions regarding Master's programs with certification or simply certification programs. Approved Programs.
- Step 2:The SBEC has a thorough checklist for future teachers online. Follow their instructions from this page regarding the chronological order of "things" you need to do.
- Step 3:Two very important steps are missing from the link above. The website does not mention you need to know the proper exams that need to be taken from TExES and when you should take them. Secondly, it does not mention that you will need to submit a recommendation for the release of your criminal records. This information can be found at the TExES website and a page from the SBEC website that is strangely difficult to find, Criminal Record and Fingerprinting information.
- Step 4:Sit Back and Relax!
- Route 2: Alternative Approach
- Step 1:Follow the instructions from the State Board of Educator Certification for Temporary Teacher Certificate Candidates.
-
Step 2:The link under "Step 1" takes you to a page that is a comprehensive list of candidate requirements. Therefore, we will stop here and let you examine the well put together SBEC page.
The Temporary Teacher Certificate (TTC) allows the holder to begin teaching prior to the completion of a teacher education program. This certification may only be issued for grades 8-12 in curriculum areas that currently have exams under TExES. A Temporary Teacher Certificate holder is allowed to teach a maximum of 3 yrs. before they must apply for and receive their Standard Certification.
