South Dakota Teacher Certification Renewal:
A South Dakota Teaching Certification may be valid for various lengths of time depending upon which certification was initially received.
You may have a 1-year certification which is typically for those who have not satisfied the minimum requirements for certification. This type of certification is not renewable, however, there may be exceptions based on circumstance.
The Alternative Certification is valid for 2-years and those who have completed the alternative teacher certification program will then be issued a regular Initial South Dakota Teaching Certificate.
The Initial Certification is valid for 5 years and is renewable. There is also a certification that is valid for 10 years issued to those who have completed an advanced degree program such as a Master's program, Specialist degree program, a Doctorate program or a have received a National Board Certification.
The following are requirements to be completed in order to renew the latter of those certifications mentioned.

Initial Certification Renewal:

Complete 6 semester hours or CEU's (90 clock hours) from a South Dakota Department of Education approved institution.
At least 3 of the 6 semester hours must be college transcripted hours (graduate level coursework).
You may be eligible for a 1-year renewal if you have not completed the necessary 6 semester hours of professional development.

Certification Renewal Application Procedure:The following are a list of steps to be taken in order to renew your certification. This list is a guideline that is subject to change and you should contact the South Dakota Department of Education to make sure you have all the information you need to renew your certification.

Either complete your application online or download the application off the web.

Provide the appropriate fee for renewal by check or money order made payable to the "South Dakota Department of Education"

Submit verification of Continuing Education Units or Semester hour completion by attaching Official Transcripts of coursework.
