North Carolina Teacher Certification Renewal:

  • Renewal Instructions
  • The North Carolina Teacher's Certification is valid for 5 years. During the life of your initial certification, you will need to complete certain prerequisites of professional development, either through earning a master's degree, a national board certification or a certain amount of semester hours of professional training.

    • Step 1:
      Complete 10 semester hours or 15 units of renewal credit.
      • Local in-service courses or workshops
      • Teaching Experience: 1 renewal credit is awarded for each year of full-time teaching.
      • Earn a Master's degree in education and upgrade your certification while you gather credit for certification renewal.

    • Step 2:
      Complete Form U. First Download the Teacher Certification Renewal Application Packet.

    • Step 3:
      Have your employing school district complete a Verification of Experience Form (Form E). This form can be found within the initial application packet.

    • Step 4:
      You will need to include a $55 processing fee by check or money-order made payable to the "Department of Public Instruction"
