- Renewal Instructions
- Step 1:Complete 10 semester hours or 15 units of renewal credit.

By college or university credit.

Local in-service courses or workshops

Teaching Experience: 1 renewal credit is awarded for each year of full-time teaching.
- Earn a Master's degree in education and upgrade your certification while you gather credit for certification renewal.

- Step 2:Complete Form U. First Download the Teacher Certification Renewal Application Packet.
- Step 3:Have your employing school district complete a Verification of Experience Form (Form E). This form can be found within the initial application packet.
- Step 4:You will need to include a $55 processing fee by check or money-order made payable to the "Department of Public Instruction"

The North Carolina Teacher's Certification is valid for 5 years. During the life of your initial certification, you will need to complete certain prerequisites of professional development, either through earning a master's degree, a national board certification or a certain amount of semester hours of professional training.
