New Mexico Teacher Reciprocity:

  • Receiving a New Mexico Teaching Certification

  • If you are currently teaching in another state and have completed a teacher preparation program, under interstate reciprocity, you are eligible to apply for a New Mexico Teaching Certificate.

    The following steps are requirements for applying for a New Mexico certificate:
  • Step 1:
    You must possess a Bachelor's degree or higher.

  • Step 2:
    You must possess a currently valid teaching certification from another state.

  • Step 3:
    You must provide proof of a completed Teacher Education Program.

  • Step 4:
    You must provide proof of passing competency exams required for you currently valid teaching certification.

  • Step 5:
    Verity teaching experience from your supervisor at the school where you were teaching.

  • Step 6:
    You must complete be cleared with a background check processed by the state of New Mexico as well as the Federal Bureau of investigations, if you have not already done this.

    Call (505) 827-6104 or (505) 827-6649 to have two fingerprint cards sent to you by regular mail.

  • Step 7:
    Complete an application and the following items:
    • You will need to download and complete the New Mexico Teacher Certification Application
    • Provide Official Transcripts of teacher preparation program credit.
    • Include front and back copies of you valid teaching certification.
    • Verification of passing scores for competency exams.
    • Include verification of teaching experience.
    • Fingerprint cards for processing.
    • All necessary fees (you can find out what fees are applicable through the New Mexico Department of Education Website.
