The following are two separate routes and associated steps to earn your Initial Montana Teaching Certification. Click here to skip down to the Alternative Route to Certification.
- Route 1: Montana's Traditional Route to Certification
- Step 1:You must have completed a teacher preparation program from an accredited institution. Montana Teacher Preparation Programs.
Or request information from the accredited universities below: - University of Phoenix (offers bachelor degree program with teaching certification in FL and AZ)
- Walden University
- Ashford University (offers bachelor degree program with teaching certification)

Step 2:Typically, an advisor from your Teacher Preparation Institute will assist you with downloading and completing your application for the Initial Montana Teaching Certification.
However, if you are inclined to take matters into your own hands, download the Application for Montana Licensure
You will also need to provide a fee of $36 made payable to the "Montana Office of Public Instruction" -
Step 3:You will need to have a representative from your teacher preparation program complete and sign the Institutional Recommendation and Evaluation section of the Class 2 Application.

Step 4:You will need to submit your fingerprints and a initiate a background check before you will be considered for Montana's Initial Teaching Certificate.
You will need to request a fingerprint packet from Montana's Office of Public Instruction.

There will be a fee of $34. Make a check payable to the "Montana Department of Justice". -
Step 5:Your application will need to bare your teacher prep. institute's seal before being sent to the Montana Office of Public Instruction.

Step 6:Sit Back and Relax!
For certification applicants who have completed formal teacher education training, the proper Montana Certification type to be applied for will be the Class 2 Standard Montana Teacher's License. The Class 2 Standard Teacing License is valid for 5 years.

You must have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree.

You must have additional semester credits for various classes that are different whether you are teaching elementary or secondary students.

Provide fee of $24 made payable to the "Montana Office of Public Instruction"

Complete a Background Check.

Provide official Transcripts of all degree(s) and educational coursework you have completed.

The Montana Alternative Certification Route allows the applicant to acquire an educator's license prior to the completion of a Teacher Education Program.
When enrolled in a Montana Alternative Certification Program, you will be awarded a 3-year Alternative Teaching Certification. This certification is non-renewable and you will have to complete all requirements to be eligible for a Class 2 Standard License if you wish to continue teaching after your Alternative Certification expires.
The requirements for an Alternative Montana License will vary depending on whether you wish to teach elementary or secondary education, become a principle, become a counselor etc.
