Steps to becoming a teacher in Michigan:

You must have a college degree to become a teacher in any field. Unlike many states, Michigan does not offer an alternative certification route. You must have completed a teacher education program prior to entering the classroom as a certified teacher.
  • Michigan's Provisional Teaching Certificate

  • The initial teaching credential of Michigan is valid for six years. During which time, you are expected to have gained adequate experience as a teacher and also to have partaken in professional development training is some form in order to earn the next level of certification.

    • Step 1:

Request information from accredited institutions regarding Master's programs with certification or simply certification programs. This is the only way for a future Michigan teacher to begin his/her process to earning a certification. Michigan does not provide application material online for the certification candidate. All information and application material will come from the university where you complete your teacher education program.

    • Step 2:

You will need to have official transcripts from all post-secondary educational institutes you have attended sent to the university you are attending to earn your teacher certification (this will be a prerequisite for entering into the university's teacher education program).

    • Step 3:

Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC): You will need to take the MTTC tests and earn satisfactory scores.
      • For elementary level certificates (Elementary, Special Education and Child Development Majors), you will take the MTTC Elementary Test.
      • For secondary level certificates, you must take the MTTC subject tests for both your degree major and minor.
      • For more information contact:
        Dr. Steven Stegink
        Phone: (517)-241-4945

    • Step 4:

You will need to become certified in CPR/First Aid through a qualified CPR/First Aid training institution (eg. American Red Cross, American Heart Association, etc.)

    • Step 5:

In Coordination with the university where you are gaining your teacher education, you will be given an application that needs to be completed by you. You will need the following to be completed:
      • Sign and date both your application and some type of conviction release form.
      • You will not forward any application fee payment to the university you are attending. The Michigan Department of Education will send you a bill.
      • Documentation of your satisfactory scores on the MTTC tests must be attached.
      • CPR/First Aid verification must also be included.

    • Step 6:
