Maine Initial Teaching Certification:

Follow the steps below and apply for a Maine Initial Teacher Certification.

If you wish to become a teacher before acquiring your Initial Teacher Certification, find out how to qualify for an Alternative Teacher Certification.
  • Maine Intial Teacher Certification
  • The following are the requirements and steps toward receiving your Maine initial teacher certification:

    • Step 1:

      You must complete a teacher education program from an accredited university.


    • Step 2:

      Request the Application for Initial Certification EF-C-300-1 Online OR,

      Request an application by email at Cert.DOE@maine.gov, OR,

      Request an application by phone at (207) 624-6603

    • Step 3:

      Complete Fingerprinting and criminal background check requirements.
      • You do not need to provide a completed fingerprint packet with your application. Fingerprinting must be completed before you may be issued the Maine Initial Teaching Certification.
      • Call the State of Maine Department of Education at (207) 624-6603 to request a Fingerprint packet.

      • There is a one-time fee of $55 for Fingerprint Processing.

    • Step 4:

      Pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST). This is the competency exam for Maine's Initial Educators.

      Request more information from the ETS Website.

    • Step 5:

      Provide the appropriate fees for your Maine Teacher Certification.
      • Initial Maine Teacher Certification - $100
      • Each additional endorsement - $35
      • Initial Maine Administrative Credentials - $200
      Pay by check or money order made payable to the "Treasurer State of Maine"

    • Step 6:

      Your application packet should contain the following contents.
      • A completed Initial Maine Teacher Certification Application
      • Official Transcripts of all your completed college credits.
      • Provide the appropriate endorsement code and grade level on the application.
      • Provide the appropriate fees as listed above.

    • Send materials to this address:

    • Step 7:

  • Maine Alternative Teacher Certification

  • You may be eligible for a Conditional Maine Teaching Certification through Transcript Analysis.

    The following are the requirements for someone to become certified under Transcript Analysis.

    • Provide Official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate coursework completed.
    • You must also pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) and a Content Specific Exam. Request information from the ETS website.
    • You must complete requirements for an Initial Maine Teacher Certification while serving under the Conditional Certification.
