Follow the steps below and apply for a Louisiana Initial Teacher Certification.

  • The following are the requirements and steps toward receiving your Louisiana initial teacher certification:
    • Step 1:
      You must complete a teacher education program from an accredited university.


    • Step 2:
      Your Teacher Education Program's certification officer will inform and provide you with the appropriate paperwork and procedures for applying for a Louisiana teaching certification.

  • Louisiana Alternative Teacher Certification

  • There are three different avenues to receive a Louisiana Alternative Teacher Certification. The following avenue is the most popular option to alternative certification.

    *Important* -- You must possess a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university to be considered for the for the Louisiana Alternative Certification programs.

    You must also pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) and a Content Specific Exam. Request information from the ETS website.

    • Practitioner Teacher Program:
      The Louisiana Practitioner Teacher Program offers the candidate a provisional teaching certification when he/she is accepted into the program.

      Over the following year, you will be inducted into a mentoring program as you teacher as well as take teacher education courses to accompany your mentoring.

      Upon completion of the first year, if you have received a successful evaluation, you will be awarded a professional license. Find more information on TeachLouisiana.net.
