Steps to become a teacher in Kansas:

Follow the steps below and begin your career as a teacher in Kansas. If you wish to become a teacher before acquiring your Conditional Teacher Certification, find out how to qualify for an Alternative Teacher Certification.
  • Kansas Conditional Teacher Certification

    • Step 1:

      You must have at least a bachelor's degree to become a teacher in Kansas. Request information from accredited institutions regarding Bachelor's programs, Master's programs with certification or simply certification programs.


    • Step 2:

      To begin the application, you will either want to have completed your teacher education program or at least be currently enrolled in a program. Kansas Teacher Preparation Programs.

    • Step 3:

      You must have a GPA of 2.5 or better.

    • Step 4:

      Recency: you must have 8 credit hours or one year of accredited teaching experience withing the last six years.

    • Step 5:

      You will need to complete a Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) fingerprint card and submit this card with a processing fee to the address indicated on the card. Find more information, Here.

    • Step 6:

      You will need to pass a content assessment

    • Step 7:

      You will need to pass a Pedagogy Assessment regarding the principles of learning and teaching (PLT)

    • Step 8:

      You will need to request an application packet from the institute where you are receiving your teacher preparation education.

    • Step 9:

      Your Conditional Teacher Certification packet should contain the following contents:

      • Completed application
      • Official Transcripts of all degrees and credits you have earned
      • Non-refundable fee by check or money order made payable to: Kansas State Department of Education

  • Kansas Alternative Teacher Certification - Restricted Teaching License

  • With a Kansas Restricted Teaching License, the applicant may begin teaching prior to the completion of a teacher preparation program. This program is completed over 3 years of collaborative effort with the applicant, the school district, a mentor teacher and the teacher preparation institution.

    *Important* -- You must possess a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university to be considered for the Restricted Teaching Licensure Program. Browse through our teacher education programs.

    • Step 1:

    • Step 2:

      There is a $36 fee for application processing. A check or money order should be made payable to:
      Kansas State Department of Education

    • Step 3:

      Obtain Official Transcripts (photocopies will not be permitted) and attach them to your application.

    • Step 4:

      You must have a job offer from a Kansas School District.

    • Step 5:

      You will need to complete a Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) fingerprint card and submit this card with a processing fee to the address indicated on the card. Find more information, Here.

  • One Year Non-Renewable Kansas Licensure
  • The one year non-renewable Kansas licensure has the same requirements as a Conditional Licensure except for the prerequisite pre-licensure tests.

    A written request needs to be sent to the Kansas Department of Education from a district administrator that verifies employment in a Kansas district.

    Pre-licensure tests will need to be completed during the school year in order to upgrade to a conditional License.
