Steps to becoming a teacher in Indiana:
The following are two separate routes and associated steps to earn your Indiana Teaching Certification. Click here to skip down to the Alternative Route to Certification.
- Route 1: Indiana Initial Teaching License/Certification
- Step 1:You must have completed a teacher preparation program from an accredited institution. Indiana Teacher Preparation Programs.
Make sure the school you plan to attend is either NCATE accredited and/or the institution has submitted a Unit Assessment System to the Indiana Department of Education's Advisory Board for program approval. -
Step 2:You will need to pass the following examinations:

The Praxis I Test of Basic Skills

The Praxis II Content Test related to your subject area

Step 3:Typically, you will file your application through the university where you received your Teacher Training. You will need to complete the Application for Indiana Teaching Form 9331.

Step 4:Attach a cashier's check or money order for $35 made payable to the "State of Indiana".

Step 5:Attach the original "limited criminal history report". The Indiana State Police will send you the original copy approximately two weeks after submitting the Limited Criminal History application.

Step 6:Sit Back and Relax!
For certification applicants who have completed formal teacher education training, the proper Indiana Certification type to be applied for will be the Standard Indiana Teacher Certification or Original Teacher Certification. This certification is valid for 5 years and is renewable. Below are the steps that must be taken in order to qualify for this professional teacher certification in Indiana:
- Route 2: Indiana Alternative Certification
- A bachelor degree or higher in the field you wish to teach.
- Have five or more years of experience in an occupation related to the field you wish to teach.

Pass Praxis I basic skills tests through the ETS.

Pass Praxis II through the ETS or satisfy content educational requirements through 24 credit hours for your core academic subject or earn you master's degree in core subject.
- Find employment in a school district where teachers are in shortage. Teacher Placement Information.
- An Emergency Permit Application (this application is provided for by the school district where you are hired)
- Certified Check or Money Order for $35 made payable to the "State of Indiana"
- Official Transcripts
- Limited Criminal History Report
- Approved Confirmation Form for Indiana Emergency Permit
The Indiana Alternative Certification is referred to as the Indiana Emergency Permit. This permit allows the holder to begin teaching in a charter or public school in Indiana prior to the completion of an accredited teacher education program.
