Steps to becoming a teacher in Illinois:

  • Illinois Teacher Certification Procedure:
    • You will need to find out whether your current certification exempts you from having to pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test or the Illinois Content Test. You will be required to pass the Assessment of of Professional Teaching Test.
    • You will need to forward the following documents to the Illinois Division of Certification:
      • Official Transcripts
      • Copies of both sides of your out-of-state teaching certificates
      • Original letters verifying teaching experience indicating duration of experience, grade level/subject and be signed by a district administrator.
      • Out-of-state certification authority verification form 73-99. Find form at www.isbe.net/certification
      • Submit appropriate fees. You will be notified of other fees that must be paid, beyond application processing fees, upon receipt of your certification.
