Steps to become a teacher in Arizona:
Follow the steps below and begin your career as a teacher in Arizona. If you wish to become a teacher before acquiring your provisional certification, find out how to qualify for an Emergency Teacher Certification.
- Arizona Provisional Teacher Certification
- Step 1:You must have at least a bachelor's degree to become a teacher in Arizona. Request information from accredited institutions regarding Bachelor's programs, Master's programs with certification or simply certification programs.
- Step 2:To begin the application, you will either want to have completed your teacher education program or at least be currently enrolled in a program.
- Step 3:You can download an application as well as directions for the application, Here. There is an application processing fee of $60 or more depending on your certification and possible endorsements.
- Step 4:You must have taken and received passing scores on the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA). Find out what tests you will need to take for your certification, Here.

Step 5:You must have an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by the Arizona Department of Education (Call this number for information: (602) 223-2279).

Step 6:Request Official Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have attended (photocopied transcripts will not be accepted).

Step 7:Your Provisional Teacher Certification packet will contain the following contents:
- Completed application packet

All necessary non-refundable fees*
- Official Transcripts of all degrees and credits you have earned

A photocopy of your valid Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card

AEPA test scores. Contact the Arizona Teacher Certification office at one of their three offices to verify passing scores before sending your application (send an email to: Certification@ade.az.gov)

- Step 3:The Request Form for Emergency Teacher Certification must be completed and signed by your employing school district superintendent. The employing school district will provide this form.

Step 5:A check of money order of $60 made out to the Arizona Department of Education must be attached to Request Form.
