Steps to renewing your certification:
- Initial Certification Renewal
Actually, the Alaska Initial Teacher Certification is non-renewable! In order to continue teaching, you must apply for and receive a Professional Teacher Certificate.
- Professional Teacher Certificate
Step 1:
All requirements for the Professional Teaching Certificate must be met during the life of the Initial Teacher Certification.
Step 2:
Teacher preparation program must be completed before applying.

Step 3:
You must have fulfilled all of the following requirements:
- 3 semester hours of Approved Alaska Studies Coursework (find approved courses, Here)
- 3 semester hours of Multicultural/Cross Cultural Coursework (find approved courses, Here)
- 6 semester hours of Continuing Education Credit
- Transcripts for all coursework should be included in application

Step 4:
Content exams for Praxis II should be sent from testing organizations (e-mail: tcwebmail@eed.state.ak.us to make sure scores have arrived before sending application).

Step 5:
Have two performance reviews sent to the Teacher Certification office (e-mail: tcwebmail@eed.state.ak.us to make sure reviews have arrived before sending application).

Step 6:
You will need to submit an application packet containing the following contents (download application packet, Here):

Completed application form

$125* non-refundable application fee

Official Transcripts of coursework

If not on file, two fingerprint cards and a separate $66 nonrefundable fingerprint fee
You must have your application notarized or a postmaster may witness, date stamp and sign the affidavit.
* If paying by check or money order, make payable to the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development.

An Alaska Professional Teaching Certificate is valid for 5 years. During this time you will need to complete the following:
