Steps to becoming a teacher in Alaska:
Follow the steps below and begin your career as a teacher in Alaska.
- Initial Teacher Certification
Step 1:
You must have at least a bachelor's degree to become a teacher in Alaska. Request information from accredited institutions regarding Bachelor's programs, Master's programs with certification or simply certification programs.
Step 2:
To begin the application, you will either want to have completed your teacher education program or at least be currently enrolled in a program.
Step 3:
You can download an application as well as directions for the application, Here. There is an application processing fee of $125.
Step 4:
You must have taken and received passing scores on the Praxis I, CBEST or West B tests. Find out what scores are passing, Here (you will find links to the homepages of each testing organization here as well).

Step 5:
Fingerprint cards and an application for a background check must also be submitted the original Initial Teacher Certification application. There will be a fingerprint processing fee of $66. Request two fingerprint cards from the Alaska Department of Education by calling this number, (907) 465-2441, or by e-mail to: tcwebmail@eed.state.ak.us

Step 6:
Request Official Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have attended.

Step 7:
Your Initial Teacher Certification packet will contain the following contents:
Completed application packet

$191* non-refundable fee
Official Transcripts of all degrees and credits you have earned
Two fingerprint cards

Test scores must be sent directly from the testing organization. Contact Teacher Certification at (907-465-2831) to verify passing scores before sending your application.

You must have a completed institutional recommendation form completed by someone from the University where are completing or have completed you Teacher Education. Form is part of initial teacher application form that you may download.
