Steps to renewing your certification:

  • Professional Educator Certification Renewel

    • Step 1:
      Make sure you submit your application by Dec. 31st of the year your certification expires. Download application Here.

    • Step 2:
      Complete an EXP form which verifies educational experience and continuing education units(CEU's). Download form Here.

    • Step 3:
      You must have fulfilled one of these scenarios to be eligible:
      1. 3 full years of full-time educational experience and CEU's.
      2. 3 full years of full-time educational experience and 3 semester/4 quarter hrs. of allowable school credit.
      3. 5 CEU's and 3 semester/4 quarter hrs of allowable school credit.
      4. 6 semester/9 quarter hrs of allowable school credit.
      5. Attained your Initial issuance of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) before the expiration of your certification.

    • Step 4:
      Call the Alabama Department of Education at #334-242-9700 and either set up an appointment with an advisor or speak with one over the phone to make sure everything is in order.

    • Step 5:
      Before Dec. 31st of the year your certification expires, you will need to submit a packet containing the following contents:
      • Completed application form with accompanying EXP form.
      • $30* non-refundable application fee
      • Official Transcripts of all degrees and credits you have earned since initial certification.
      • If not on file, two fingerprint cards, a Release Form, a Background Review Consent Form, and a separate $49 nonrefundable fingerprint fee
      • * All fees should be in the form of cashiers check or money order made payable to the Alabama State Department of Education.

    • Step 6:
      Sit Back and Relax!
  • Alternative Baccalaureate Certification Renewal

    • Step 1:
      Over the course of 3 years, you will need to fullfill 12 semester hours of coursework in the following fields:

      • Classroom Management
      • Evaluation of Teaching and Learning
      • Inclusion of Special Needs Students
      • Methods of Teaching, Integration of Technology and Instruction

    • Step 2:
      You must complete two of the four courses listed and send your transcripts to the Teacher Education and Certification Office (address below or above) in order to recieve your second alternative certification.

    • Step 3:
      You must complete the remaining courses listed and send your transcripts to the Teacher Education and Certification Office (address below or above) in order to recieve your third alternative certification.

    • Step 4:
      Upon satisfactory completion of your third year with an alternative certification, you will be eligible to apply for your professional educator certification.

    • Step 5:
      Call the Alabama Department of Education at #334-242-9700 and either set up an appointment with an advisor or speak with one over the phone to make sure everything is in order.

    • Step 6:
      You will need to apply for your professional educator certification no later than one year after your third alternative certification expires. Send an application with the following contents:
      • Completed application form with accompanying EXP (download form Here) form and EXP PT (completed by superintendent)
      • $30* non-refundable application fee
      • Official Transcripts of all degrees and credits you have earned since previous certification.
      • If not on file, two fingerprint cards, a Release Form, a Background Review Consent Form, and a separate $49 nonrefundable fingerprint fee
      • * All fees should be in the form of cashiers check or money order made payable to the Alabama State Department of Education.
